Samsung’s Dual Format DVD Player

South Korean consumer electronics giant Samsung are due to release a dual format next-generation DVD player. This news comes after Samsung rival, LG, released a player which is capable of playing both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats.

Samsung have announced their player will support both HD DVD and Blu-ray formats as well as their interactive technologies, BD-Java and HDi, which they are calling its ‘Duo HD’ player. Samsung executive Vice President Dongsoo Jun is quoted as saying: “Consumers are hungry for more HD content but are currently confused about competing formats. Samsung’s Duo HD player will allow consumers access to every HD movie title available regardless of the authoring format. Samsung is committed to making life simpler through technology and will market next generation DVD products which will satisfy the consumer and market requirement. This is a big win for the consumer.”

The move has been welcomed by Ron Sanders, president of Warner Home Video as another solution that will reduce consumer confusion during the battle of both formats.

Personally, I think this move is a good move but, better still, would be an agreement amongst all companies to end the war and stop confusing people, losing consumer confidence and put back a little more honesty into big corporations. Did they learn nothing from the Betamax/VHS war?
