I am a bit disappointed with this one. It has a rather large and tinny case, an appreciable boot up time, and worst of all, a whirring cooling fan. The DVD drive mutters to itself a bit as well. The whole package brings to mind an assemblage of OEM parts, reminiscent of its PC parentage rather than a ground-up designed consumer electronics product. On the plus side, the upscaled picture from regular DVDs is a noticeable improvement.
Buy this player at £[…] its a bargain the quality of high def has to be seen to be believed put in a standard dvd the likes of pirates of the Caribbean (Dead Man’s Chest)and WoW a new collection you might decide to watch your standard dvds and forget there are hd dvds to buy, yes it will not play region 1 dvd but thats a minor problem unless you have aquired a vast amount, audio is clear and crisp through the stereo analogue connections, 5.1 superb, why pay more.
looks good and was quite easy to set up after I’d figured out the best settings to link in with my home cinema unit. The hi-def pictures are great and a really noticeable improvement on anything I’ve seen before - watched World Trade Centre and Miami Vice so far. Bit disappointed with the upscaling of standard DVDs - this doesn’t seem to be any better than my old standard player on component connection and this was the reason I went for the Toshiba over PS3 which doesn’t upscale. It loses a star for this reason.
Overall though a top machine which will become even greater value for money as more films are released on HD.
